The first wine cafe to hit Edinburgh, Toast can be found at The Shore in Leith. Here, you'll be able to get your hands on fantastic food, wine and coffee offerings, in a laid back setting that was once an art gallery. Toast is open seven days from early in the morning until late, and the menu changes from breakfast and brunch throughout the day to smaller plates with a Mediterranean influence. On the deli counter you will find plenty of great cakes and pastries, including vegan and gluten free options.
Cold pressed fresh juice will make sure you start your day the right way, and there are flavour blends of strawberry with watermelon and red apple, and carrot with orange, apple and ginger. A simple breakfast, but one that's totally delicious, is the sausage and caramelised onion in a ciabatta roll, and you can add on fried eggs or a potato scone if you're feeling hungry. The masala beans will warm you up, with haricot beans cooked in fresh Indian spices with pancetta and two poached eggs on toasted sourdough. Have a sweet tooth? Try the stack of light and fluffy American style pancakes made with flesh blueberries, topped with crispy bacon and maple syrup, or fresh seasonal fruit compote with a lime mascarpone and a honey drizzle. A heartier dish is the roasted chipotle chicken with a mango salad, along with the incredibly tasty and nutritious super green salad. This bowl is filled with roasted courgettes, asparagus, broccoli, green beans, garden peas, mint, lime and avocado, topped with crumbled feta and served with chimichurri dressing. On a cold day, order the bubbling hot shakshuka, which is a rich stew of tomato, aubergine, roast pepper, chilli and onion, baked with two eggs.
