Set up by Mancunian brothers Noel and Max Venning (the latter a protégé of renowned mixologist Tony Conigliaro), this austerely decorated, pint-sized lounge recalls the diner in Edward Hopper’s painting Nighthawks. The cocktail list – short, but long on interesting ideas – is refreshed monthly to reflect the season. Foraged Martini (Beefeater gin, home-infused ‘leaf vermouth’ and a sprig of gypsophila) is an appealingly fresh, floral, autumnal drink. Other £8 hits include a light take on classic gin sparkler French 75 (with verjus, Moscato wine and orange flower), and Pear & Pastis (it’s what it says, helped by Reyka vodka and a hint of lemon). A trio of Italian wines, and beers such as Wiper and True IPA or Harbour Pilsner, provide back-up. This lovely local micro-bar is open in the daytime for coffee and cake – or for hair of the dog, if you were three sheets to the wind last night.
