Judging by the ghostly Goths and EMO kids piling into this sprawling boozer’s live music lounge (the appositely named Underworld), it’s forever Halloween at this Camden fixture. As the Mother Redcap, it once served highwaymen, witches, wenches, card sharps, conmen, dandies and Dickens – the latter on the look-out for new characters, no doubt. What was a proverbial Bleak House has been attractively refurbished in a style that suggests a Victorian train station, complete with (fake) shops. Two busy bars serve industrial quantities of Stella Artois and her continental cousins, and there’s Camden Pale Ale on tap, along with sub-£15 wines and a range of spirits – both alcoholic and other-worldly. Yes, it’s haunted! Billed as ‘probably Britain’s biggest pub,’ anything goes here... except ‘unusual pets and nuclear weapons’, according to its prominently displayed house rules.
