SquareMeal Review of The Workshop

Like its elder sibling Russell’s, this casual all-day eatery is housed in what was the HQ of furniture designer Gordon Russell. Inside, it’s a real charmer with heavy oak beams, leaded windows & painstakingly sourced pieces of original GR furniture, plus rows of homemade jams and chutney for that personal touch. Bubbly staff oversee breakfasts & afternoon teas as well ‘canteen’ lunches, & the weekly menu offers hearty British dishes cooked with flair. To start, a rich soft-boiled duck egg was paired with a stack of lightly breaded asparagus spears for dipping, while a huge, chunky fishcake was set off by bright salad leaves dressed with the lightest of vinaigrettes. For afters, don’t miss the Eton mess packed with flavourful local fruit & crisp meringue, or the luxurious, intensely creamy rice pudding flecked with nutmeg. With its sure-footed approach & egalitarian prices, the Workshop is an institution in the making.
