The Bull has been around since the 1500s and has managed to build quite the reputation in the meantime. Sitting as the cornerstone of Charlbury, it’s managed to keep its historical charm whilst also providing the community with some first class food.
First and foremost, this is a local pub where you can stop by for a pint and a catch up with friends, but the restaurant has quickly made it a destination for visitors from further afield. The food here is centred around open fire cooking, and is a daily changing menu due to the kitchen team working directly with farmers and growers to find out what’s available.
You can expect to find unfussy dining that still delivers top quality plates of food that change with the seasons. During the warmer months you can enjoy dishes cooked on the BBQ, whilst on Sundays the team will be cooking whole animals over an open fire. Sourcing ingredients from both the land and sea, you can expect to find anything from oysters and whole Turbot through to pigeon and beef fillet, paired with a variety of veg.
To drink, there is an extensive wine list, including everything from white and red to orange or ‘skin contact’, as well as an English sparkling wine from Bolney wine estate in West Sussex. There is also a number of beers available with lagers, ales and stouts.
The Bull lends itself as a space for both a relaxed catch up with friends, as well as somewhere to head to for special occasions, with options to book a table in the restaurant, opt for an intimate setting in the private dining room, or use the garden tent for larger parties. The four legged members of the family are also welcome here, including in the overnight rooms that are just a quick trip upstairs.
