This smart City bar and restaurant has more of a history than you might realise when you first walk in. This was once the site of the King's Wardrobe - literally, the department of the royal household charged with safekeeping the King's garments, arms and armour - but the building burnt down during the 1666 great fire of London. Now it stands memorialised in name by The Wardrobe - a trendy, cosy bar between Blackfriars and St Pauls that's perfect for City drinkers and al fresco diners alike.
The Wardrobe gets especially busy in the summer when the sun makes a rare appearance over London, thanks to green and spacious rear courtyard. Large outdoor areas like this are a rarity in the City, so the courtyard tends to generate a fantastic buzz in the evenings, particularly thanks to a 5-7pm happy hour from Tuesday to Friday.
Head inside and you'll find is cosy, funky and colourful, with plenty of table space over multiple levels. A striking floral installation overhead, as well as exposed brick walls, wood floors and tables give The Wardrobe a relaxed, organic feel, and like the outside courtyard, the bar has a great atmosphere in the evenings.
As for the menu, expect classic British pub fare - mains include chicken supreme in white wine and tarragon sauce, beer-battered fish and chips and a hefty beef burger, but there are sharing platters and small bites available too, as well as comforting puds like plum and apple crumble and hot chocolate fondant.
Brunch fans are also very welcome at The Wardrobe, which offers a brunch menu that includes a full English tart (a full English in a puff pastry tart base) as well as classic egg dishes and pastries. Bottomless brunchers can get two hours of unlimited cocktails too, but make sure you book in advance.
