SquareMeal Review of The Spotted Horse

Bronze Award

A gem in the rough on Putney High Street, The Spotted Horse was already serving locals in the 1750s – although its charming, bijou chocolate-box ‘Georgian’ frontage is actually a 20th-century addition. Inside this deceptively roomy and perennially popular inn, 2017’s splashy makeover from Young’s Brewery (all mustard, moss and kingfisher blue tones) plunders various decades for stylistic inspiration. Chill out on one of the Edwardian plush sofas with a pint of the owners’ finest beers or chocolate stout, a guest ale (Wimbledon Brewery’s autumnal Copper Leaf, for example) or something from the sub-£30 wine list. All-day eats include anything from a full English breakfast and brunchtime baps to light bites (buttermilk chicken wings with chilli and lemongrass dip), rabbit, bacon and chicken pie or smoked haddock and poached egg on herbed mash with spinach, followed by crumbles, ices or sticky toffee pud. Alternatively, soak up some rays on the Juniper Terrace, where the curious cottagey bar features a 10-strong list of G&Ts.
