In the quiet village of Foelgastell, Carmarthenshire, you’ll come across The Smiths Arms, an inviting country pub with traditional, homemade food. Situated just a few minutes drive from the National Botanic Gardens of Wales, The Smiths Arms offers a great spot to rest with some hearty food when travelling in the south west of Wales.
Inside, customers will find a roaring log fire in the old pub complete with stone walls and wooden beams. Coffee mornings, weekly offers, a daily specials board and fresh fish days on both Thursday and Friday nights are some of the very inviting parts about The Smiths Arms. Lunch is served from 12 until 2pm on Tuesdays through to Saturday, and evening meals from 5 until 8pm. Traditional Sunday roasts are available between 12 and 3pm, offering beef, turkey and pork options, along with a vegetarian Wellington and vegan nut roast all with lashings of gravy, parsnips and roast potatoes. Freshly cooked stone baked baguettes of mature cheddar cheese and red onions, southern fried chicken strips and BBQ sauce, and halloumi with basil and balsamic glaze start at just £6.50, perfect for a lunchtime snack. Real ales, ciders and beers are rotated weekly, and largely sourced from regional suppliers, similar to the ingredients used in lots of The Smiths Arms dishes, which the restaurant sources to support local businesses.
Inviting desserts range from a rich chocolate fudge gateau and Belgian apple pie to creamy rice pudding and the cheesecake of the week. There is a whole section on the main menu of 'Homemade' dishes, which makes The Smiths Arms a lovely place to visit. Dishes include Welsh beef cottage pie, chilli con carne using fresh Welsh beef, home cooked Carmarthenshire maple syrup and mustard ham, and vegan five bean chilli.
