SquareMeal Review of The Rock & Sole Plaice

Bronze Award

Forgive the cheesy punning name and get ready for a true Brit experience at one of London’s oldest chippies. The classic combo of crisply battered cod, chips and mushy peas is a deservedly popular first choice for most customers, though other species (haddock, halibut and of course rock, sole and plaice) make fine alternatives if you’re in the mood. It doesn’t offer the most consistent frying in town and prices are on the steep side, but a steady stream of locals join the hungry tourists at picnic benches on a shady corner of Endell Street for slap-up lunches washed down with cans of pop or bottles of beer. Functional tables inside and berths hidden down in the gloomy basement are less appealing, although service is snappy enough.

This place is a con

I work in a local business and visit this local fish and chips restaurant with my clients regularly. It's always been pricey, but I gathered that was normal in covent garden. I was shocked yesterday to discover that the prices had risen astronomically - a fish cake that used to be £6 was now double the price - £12!! And the fish and chips itself had gone up from £14.50 to £19.50!!!!

Not only this, but the portion sizes had got smaller!

I'd booked a table for 1pm for a party of 4 and it was clear upon arriving that no table had been reserved for us and we were left waiting for one to vacate. With no apology or explanation. Then a service charge was added automatically!

This place is a massive tourist trap and scandalously overpriced- you can get fish and chips in my local takeaway for about £7. Tourists - DO NOT PAY. £20 for fish and chips in London- you are being conned.

Needless to say I shan't be going again.

Average food, ridiculous prices
Last night, in search of a quick bite to eat before meeting a pal for a drink at the Hospital Club, I wandered into The Rock & Sole Plaice fish 'n' chip cafe in Endell Street, Covent Garden. I ended up paying £22.55 for a small piece of haddock (which was OK), ghastly undercooked stodgy 'chips', a bottle of Diet Coke (an unbelievable £3!) and a small bowl of (nice) coleslaw (also £3). The service was fast and pleasant - but never again! I'm sure tourists are impressed but my local chippie beats this pla(i)ce by a mile and at a third of the price.
