SquareMeal Review of The Remedy

Bronze Award

This convivial Fitzrovia wine bar is on a mission to promote provenance, terroir and the ideals of the Slow Food movement – not surprising, since it’s run by two defectors from Covent Garden crusader Terroirs. Fans of the latter will recognise the main themes on the short, snappy menu – snacks of lardo grissini with mushroom cream, artisan cured meats and cheeses give way to various things ‘on toast’ and bigger plates of, say, smoked duck salad with grapefruit and orange or scallops with guanciale (cured pork jowl) and fig sauce. The wine list unearths terroir-driven pickings from deep-rooted Old World sources and up-and-coming young contenders; otherwise, choose your remedy from the fascinating collection of craft beers, aperitifs and digestifs.

About

The Remedy is a charming, independent neighbourhood wine bar in Fitzrovia serving up a well-curated selection of wines from across Europe, alongside Mediterranean-inspired small plates. It was opened in 2013 by Renato and Andrea, created as a place to enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, chat with friends and learn more about wine.

Inside, the space is intimate and cosy, with exposed brick walls, terracotta-hued floor tiles and rust seating giving it a warm ambiance. Prop yourself up at the bar, or gather around the low-level seating; The Remedy is welcoming and accessible for casual drinkers and wine aficionados alike.

On the wine list you'll find a selection of typical sparkling wines like Champagne and other effervescent, Champagne-method bottled from Italy and Spain. There's also a range of orange, rose, white and red, as well as cellar red and cellar white, which has been kept for longer than usual for personal preference.

From the kitchen, you can snack on Valencian almonds, Cantabrian anchovies and bread to start, before tucking into burrata with bottarga and lemon zest, as well as grilled sardines with gremolata, and veal tripe, San Marzano tomato, mint and pecorino Romano. The owners are particularly influenced by Spanish, Italian and French cuisines and it goes without saying that you're welcome to ask the team for their advice on wine and food pairings to maximise your experience.

The Remedy is open throughout the week, every day except Sundays, and is just moments away from Goodge Street tube station. You can book online all day until 6pm, but the team encourage calling the bar in case their are tables left over, and walk ins are also welcome. If you love your experience you can even buy a gift voucher for a friend, so they too can enjoy The Remedy.
