Complete with classic pub food, a lively convivial atmosphere, and regular events, The Railway makes a great spot for all manner of occasions. Whether you’re just grabbing a drink before heading to Putney station across the road or looking to while away a few hours over food with your closest friends there’s plenty going on here to keep you entertained.
The Railway first opened its doors as a pub in 1889 and has now regained its original name. The interiors reflect its heritage, with traditional pub aesthetics and plenty of cosy seating areas. It’s a classic concept, with wooden furnishings, soft lighting, and a friendly ambience. But there are modern influences at play, with spotlights and lush planters peppered throughout. There’s also a rooftop terrace, a pretty little getaway for craft ales, spicy Margaritas, and glasses of wine in the summer.
If you’re looking to add a little sparkle to casual meet-ups, on certain days of the week The Railway hosts pub quizzes, bottomless brunches, and live music events. They’re best known for the latter. In fact, The Railway was the venue where The Police played their first gig.
Although that little fact draws a lot of attention, the food menu at The Railway is arguably just as compelling, with a whole host of pub classics, along with seasonal specials, Sunday roasts, and a pizza menu. Think ham hock, cider and leek pies; beer-battered line-caught haddock; chicken schnitzel with wild rocket, fennel and parmesan; and a 28-day Himalayan salt-aged rib eye steak.
Elsewhere, dishes include pork belly bites with sweet soy, salt and pepper squid, and chorizo and smoked applewood cheddar croquettes. As for dessert, options include a classic affogato, chocolate brownies and a pub favourite sticky toffee pudding.
