About

The Malt Shovel, Brearton, is an award-winning 16th Century Country Inn, less than 10 minutes from the centre of Harrogate and signposted off the A61. With ancient oak beams, big leather chairs, flag stone floors and wonderful open fires, this characterful family-run country pub has been recognised as a "top scorer" in the Harden's Restaurant Guide 2010.

Owned by D'Arcy, Jürg, Jane and Anna Bleiker since 2006, The Malt Shovel has gained a wonderful local reputation for offering excellent food, friendly service and the warmest of welcomes. The menu is not like that of numerous franchises. It comes from individual passion where all dishes are made from scratch using the finest local ingredients and the great food and unique atmosphere make this Inn well worth seeking out. Imbued with all the personal touches you would expect from a family-run affair, it is an establishment which goes that extra mile to ensure their customers leave knowing that they have discovered a little gem.

Delicious

We had really friendly attentive service and the meal throughout was delicious. I had the french onion soup followed by sea bass in champagne sauce and for dessert a creme brulee. All was scrumptious and I would visit again anytime. My husband had the soup, steak and ale pie and affogato which he loved. Do go and eat. A lovely, relaxed meal that was fabulous. Thanks also to the staff who didn't hurry our late departure!

really mixed
Setting lovely and the atmosphere great (though everyone had to leave jumpers on). The food though was really poor. The duck was so tough I had to swap with my partner and had she had my salmon. The baked alaska was enourmous but tasted of nothing – really cheap ice cream inside (surely should go for quality to some extent). For the starter some was fine but had mini fish cakes with no fish in! The wine had no ice bucket and the waitress (though new) had to go to the bar to find what beers were on draught! Overall quite disappointing
