Based in the Grade I-listed Montpellier Rotunda, The Ivy Montpellier Brasserie in Cheltenham is impressive from both the outside and inside. Sat just across from Montpellier Gardens, this outpost of the famous chain of traditional restaurants offers a broad menu of international dishes in a setting which manages to maintain a relaxed feel despite the highly ornate architecture of the building. This makes it a brilliant spot to visit for a meal, whether you’re looking for a casual lunch with friends or a smart celebratory dinner.
The outside of the large stone building which is home to the restaurant features a number of white columns which you have to pass between on your way inside. The main dining area is in a circular room beneath an impressive dome with a central skylight. Directly beneath the skylight is a central bar topped with greenery and the rest of the room is also filled with plants, while on the walls are painted pictures of horses.
The huge all-day menu begins with starters such as duck liver parfait with caramelised hazelnuts, truffle, and a pear and ginger compote, a jackfruit and peanut bang bang salad, and a classic beef tartare topped with an egg yolk. Main courses range from vegetarian dishes such as a sweet potato curry with jasmine rice, and chargrilled halloumi with smoked aubergine and a red pepper purée, all the way through to roasted lamb rump with butter beans, and chicken breast served with truffle mashed potato. While the tempting dessert menu features vanilla cheesecake, crème brûlée, and also a selection of ice creams and sorbets.
In terms of drinks, the bar serves everything from an impressive list of wines from all over the world, to a selection of gins, beers and cocktails. For non-drinkers a range of soft drinks are available including a choice of non-alcoholic cocktails.
