If you’re looking for a charming, authentic pub with a story to tell near Belfast, this could be the one. The Hillside sits on the quaint main street which runs through the Georgian town of Hillsborough, sitting just a 15-minute drive outside of Belfast.
Painted a rich green and decorated with flowers, The Hillside looks like something out of a fairy-tale, which is an aesthetic which is fitting for its historic past. Established in 1752, it is the area’s oldest pub and originally served village men and farmers in the locality.
The interiors hark to the pub’s 250-year old past with period features like stone flooring, stained glass windows and a roaring fire. These have been complemented with cosy leather armchairs and vintage-look lamps and tables, all of which creates a homely feel.
Outdoor seating is also available, thanks to the beer garden which sits at the rear end of the pub. This space is decorated with foliage and wrought iron garden furniture, and looks to be a bit of a sun trap.
Menu wise, The Hillside’s head chef concentrates on sourcing local produce and ingredients wherever possible, with a focus on what is available seasonally. The summer menu offers a selection of wholesome mains including pork fillet medallions from Begney Hill farm, pan seared sea bass and local beer battered haddock. There’s a section for vegetarian options, too, including vegan katsu curry, veggie pasta of the day and lasagne. While dessert highlights include cheesecake of the day served with Draynes Farm ice cream, fresh fruit pavlova served with mixed berry compote and basil cream and a cheeseboard of Irish cheese.
