St. James' Court, A Taj Hotel also sports a grown-up lounge bar with a good line in smart hotel teas. The Hamptons may not be as frivolous and feminine as some of the big names, but it runs the odd special (for Wimbledon etc) with themed patisserie that would give Jane Asher a run for her money. The regular, all-year offer comes in at £25.50 per person for a selection of not too off-the-wall sandwiches (duck or cucumber and mint cream, for example), homemade scones and perhaps a slice of Victoria sponge. The beverages don’t play second fiddle to the fondant fancies either: teas are from Mighty Leaf, coffee by Illy and Champagne bears the Perrier-Jouët label. In the summer months, tea is also served in the shadow of a cherub-bedecked Victorian fountain in the courtyard.
