Helping Camden cling on to its cool-grunge credentials, the owners of Old Street’s Magic Roundabout and Peckham’s funky Near & Far have snapped up this iconic pub that was once synonymous with Britpop. Oasis, Blur and Amy Winehouse would still instantly recognise the soulful old gaff with its distressed decor. The twin rooms now fill to capacity with an endlessly fascinating stew of sparky characters, who are entertained by a vintage jukebox big on noughties indie, and a mod minstrel plonking away at the retuned old joanna – as well as games and broadcast sports. Expect a fair selection of ales behind the bar (notably Cork craft outfit Franciscan Well’s cracking Chieftain IPA, and various beers from Camden Town Brewery, natch) plus approachable vino, spirits and, erm, good mixers. A vegan option is included among the Pieminister pies and mash that feed the hungry hordes at this ‘proper London pub’.
