The George is a classic English coaching inn which is now a stylish restaurant and hotel, but was once one of the first of its kind. Indeed, the site dates back to 1578 and so history buffs will be pleased to hear that parts of the building are over 400 years old, making this venue quite unique.
While the décor is contemporary and nods to current trends with cobalt blue wall panelling and graphic wall art, much of the original features have been preserved. For example, the original ceiling beams can be seen in the restaurant area and a large, beautiful fireplace is helps create a cosy atmosphere.
The food menu at The George constitutes an impressive selection, drawing influences from different cultures and cuisines. The starter menu enjoys an emphasis on seafood with dishes such as Pool Bay oysters, moules marinière cooked in cream, garlic, parsley and white wine and whole shell on tiger prawns – although the lamb bonbons sound pretty good too.
For mains, diners can enjoy large plates such as pan-fried scallops and pressed pork belly, 21 day dry aged beef burger and broad bean and pea puree risotto. At the weekends, The George offers a few speciality menus including a hearty brunch and Sunday BBQ.
Upstairs, en-suite bedrooms feature a mix of modern styling with period architecture. Interior design highlights include moody, dark-toned feature walls, statement headboards and patterned toilet seats. Each room has all standard amenities such as tea and coffee making stations.
