SquareMeal Review of The George at Burpham
Bronze Award
Hidden up a winding lane off the A27, this “gem” of a pub (formerly The George & Dragon) is now enjoying the benefits of a smart gastro makeover, with a “fantastic” restaurant at the heart of things. “You must book or you won’t get in” warns one fan, but it’s worth the effort if you enjoy contemporary pub food with some extra zip. Old faithfuls such as warm goats’ cheese salad or battered cod and chips share the billing with a globe line-up that runs from Thai mussels and pickled herrings with sour cream and beetroot to chicken and crayfish pie, ballottine of lamb or red snapper on tagliatelle with spinach and tomato sauce. After that, why not try their treacle tart with honey and whisky ice cream. To drink, Sussex-brewed ales are always on tap, alongside British lager (By George it’s British), fruity local spirits and some decent wines.
