Farmers rather than fishermen are likely to be the main visitors to this self-styled ‘pub, restaurant... & whisky shop’ nestled in the Twine Valley on the fringes of the Pennines. Since launching in 1992, this family-run enterprise has gained a reputation for its home-reared, dry-aged Charolais beef, which takes pride of place on the menu above international favourites such as Cajun salmon, green vegetable risotto & curry. The Fisherman’s Retreat was also the first hostelry in the area to take a serious look at single malt whisky, & now offers a comprehensive, diverse & extremely well considered ‘whisky cellar’ selection of over 500 bottles from across Scotland – sample a few drams at the bar, before picking a bottle to take home. The owners are passionate about the stuff, & also host regular tasting events with local experts & speakers from the industry.
