This elder sibling of reinvented Shoreditch boozer, Well and Bucket, pulls in a cultured Clerkenwell crowd who come to admire its original moss-green tiles and sympathetically updated Victorian interior, as well as its decidedly modern range of ales. Pick from an admirable global selection of around 100 bottled craft beers and ciders, plus a dozen draughts including BrewDog 5am Saint, a quartet from Camden and Yankee doodle dandies such as California’s Arrogant Bastard – a serious investment at £8 a pint. The wine list (averaging around £20 a bottle) is a much shorter read and there are some standard cocktails too. To eat, order fish and chips with pea purée, burgers with pulled pork, salads or something from a range of generous sliders with tasty fillings such as black pudding with quail’s egg or lamb with feta and coriander mayo.
