The Barfly, a Camden legend, was played by Oasis, Blur and the late great Amy Winehouse on their way up. It was bought by Steve Ball’s Columbo Group (whose portfolio includes Camden’s recently revamped Jazz Café among other great go-to spots) and relaunched in September 2016 as The Camden Assembly. The venue’s new lease of life is welcome news for music fans – check out the kick-ass sound system – but you can also kick back with brewskis, lad lagers and various ‘rocktails’ at the bar. Alternatively, chow down on Lucky Chip’s bad-boy burgers, dogs, hot wings and Oreo ice cream sandwiches while you take in the hot emerging talent: that’s the multi-genre musicians on stage, as well as the gorgeous goths, pretty punks, skinny mop-tops, indie angels and Jim Morrison/Florence Welch tributes in the audience. There’s no need to rely on past glories: this place still has the X factor.
