Yes, it’s a spy-themed cocktail bar, but there’s much more to The Bletchley. Ticket booked, rendezvous set, we are issued with drab olive mufti and drilled on procedure at this fun Churchillian bunker based on WWII code-breaking facility, Bletchley Park. Our fiendishly complicated mission is then assigned. Reliant on old encoding machines, crackly wireless sets and instructions sheathed in manila folders, ‘agents’ must decipher clues to ‘win’ bespoke drinks (profiled according to info gleaned by the barman from answers provided along the way). When we eventually crack the code, victory isn’t sweet – one sabotaged Sour and a matcha green-tea Martini – however pretty to behold. Better than the three drinks included in the entry cost, are the main menu’s averagely priced cocktails (also available to walk-ins): Station X, a vodka, blackberry tea syrup and cranberry Mule in a tin mug, for instance. Otherwise, surreptitiously venture off-menu and order medal-worthy mescal Martinis.
