About

The Bateman Arms was built circa 1750 by Sir James Bateman (Lord Mayor Of London)  as a building where his Estate workers would collect on pay day.  No doubt they also gave him some back! Over the years it became a staging post for weary Drovers to refresh themselves as they walked livestock from West Wales to  markets in Birmingham and London. Today it acts as the meeting place for Shobdon Village (800 pop.) and as a relaxing stop over for  the many business and leisure visitors who travel to the Marches throughout the year base from which to experience the rural splendour of Herefordshire,  Shropshire, and  Mid Wales.. If you  enjoy National Trust buildings, Walking, Cycling, Mountain Biking, Fishing, Golf, Go Karting, Clay Pigeon Shooting or just lazing about, the Marches has something for you. Historic Hereford City with its Mappa Mundi and brand new shopping centre is 18 miles away and scenic Ludlow is only 15 minutes down the road.

If you are looking for a pleasant evening out with friends where you can enjoy good food and drink in a relaxed, warm and welcoming environment or you are in need of comfortable accommodation while you enjoy the riches of the Marches area, then look no further.

With a focus on quality and value we are confident that you will enjoy the meals cooked by our experienced Chefs. Produce is sourced as locally as possible and 99% of what you eat will be homemade. We recommend that you book a table, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings and for our increasingly popular Sunday lunches.
