Wrap up warm for wintertime drinks from the bar at foodie enclave Flat Iron Square. Despite wood burning fiercely in a brazier and several patio heaters, when we visit, a biting wind off the Thames cuts through the open railway arch that hosts this most chilled of chill-outs. Mulled wine and cider, fresh coffee and eats from a dozen counters and vans – encompassing a global odyssey ranging from Spain to Indonesia, via Turkey – help thaw frostbitten extremities. On balmier evenings, crisp frizzante holds allure (among four wines on tap), as do sunny-day sips Campari and bitter lemon, Flat Iron fizz or Negroni. There’s also a fair range of spirits, draught brews such as Goose Island and Brahma, and canned beers including Somerset brewer Wild Beer’s Pogo pale ale. A Sunday crafts market, strolling minstrels and other live music are all part of the alfresco fun at this sociable Southwark space.
