SquareMeal Review of Roast

Silver Award

“What’s not to like about ‘meat and vegetables’?” quips an admirer of Roast – a determinedly patriotic eatery dedicated to the glories of traditional British cuisine. Built on a mezzanine floor in Borough Market’s iconic Floral Hall, it promises “fantastic views” from its handsome, light-filled dining room. We’ve been many times for breakfast and never been disappointed, although booking ahead is essential. If you’re more interested in lunch or dinner, you’ll find “reliable” and expertly sourced dishes prepared with a fair degree of dexterity, from Portland crab salad or Scotch eggs with piccalilli to braised ox cheek on creamed onion sauce or whole grilled sea bass with fennel and capers. The menus are keenly seasonal, so also expect spring lamb, summer fruits and game too (“this is the only place to eat grouse after the Glorious 12th”, insists one fan). “Always enjoyable” Sunday roasts naturally get the nod, and the Brit-accented drinks list is also on the money.

About

Situated in the heart of Borough Market, close to some of London’s most iconic landmarks, Roast offers a contemporary take on traditional British dishes.

The first thing to note about Roast is it’s beautiful setting. Located on the mezzanine floor of the market’s former floral hall, the high ceilings and large windows provide fantastic city views, giving diners a glimpse of the nearby Shard and St Paul’s Cathedral.

Whether you’re stopping by for breakfast, afternoon tea or Sunday dinner, the menus at Roast are put together using seasonal ingredients, with a real emphasis on fresh British produce.

The Breakfast menu includes all the cooked favourites including a full English, smoked salmon and eggs Benedict. If you’re after something a little lighter, you could opt for smashed avocado, granola or porridge. Add something a little special to your breakfast with one of their ‘morning boosters’, which include Bloody Mary, Bucks Fizz and their signature Breakfast Martini!

The a la carte menu offers a range of British favourites, with starters including Jersey Rock oysters, ham hock and caper terrine and seared Orkney Island scallops. The mains feature beef wellington, pork belly and roast hake, as well as a selection of steaks, sourced from the Lake District.

On Sundays, Roast comes into its own, with the addition of a traditional roast dinner, with a choice of beef, chicken and lamb with all the trimmings.

In addition, Roast also offer an afternoon tea menu, starting at £35 a head, including three courses of cakes, scones and finger sandwiches. You could always opt for the bottomless prosecco afternoon tea, for £55.

Had a reservation at 5.30pm, waited in line for about 30 minutes but that was not the main problem. After talking to the person in charge for checking you in, we made it very clear that our intention was to have an afternoon tea. Even though there had been some problems in finding our reservation, they made us sit but unfortunately they stopped giving out afternoon tea. What was the reason for making us wait 30 minutes, having us find a solution for finding our reservation and then finally sitting us down just to tell us they stopped serving what we came there for...

Great venue for a power-breakfast

Close to both the City and and conveniant for London's busiest station for commuters, Roast is an ideal venue for a power-breakfast meeting where you can actually still hear your guest speak, unlike the so many London venues which have noisy accoustics. Roast offers a great range of choices, from both full-English and full-Scottish options for traditionalists with big appetites, kippers, smoked salmon and scrabbled eggs, eggs benedict and a wide range of healthy options for the calorie conscious.

Disappointing

Food was good, cocktails not great and dessert disappointing. Service below standard and the atmosphere in the restaurant was awful... bright lights, no ambience, dated, just not nice at all. Despite the food being good overall, the whole experience just wasn't worth the money so I won't be going back. Nor would I recommend. There are plenty of other restaurants in the area for the same price but are much nicer.

Lovely meal

The ambience was good; very relaxed atmosphere. The staff was attentive. The food itself was delicious and the portion sizes we more than enough, I didn't leave the restaurant feeling hungry. It's not cheap, but the quality of the food and the generous portion sizes are definitely value for money.
