By now most Londoners with a vague interest in food have heard of Flat Iron, and the brand’s growth with its Clink Street site is testament to the winning formula of affordable steak and a decent wine list.
The 90-cover dining room sits in a building just a stone’s throw from Borough Market, and has been designed to embrace the venue's Victorian history. Inside you’ll find restored original cast iron columns and reclaimed tiles that contrast with the otherwise contemporary interiors created by Macaulay Sinclair. Neutral tones, tan leather banquettes and warm lighting create a relaxed atmosphere, while huge original windows allow for the ideal spot to people watch from.
As with all Flat Iron branches you can expect a succinct menu of carefully chosen plates. The signature Flat Iron is the hero dish, a featherblade cut that when butchered and cooked properly is surprisingly tender and really rich in flavour. This is complemented by the brand’s famous sides. Think beef dripping chips, creamed spinach, crispy bone marrow garlic mash and roast aubergine with tomato and basil. Sauce options include a classic bearnaise, a peppercorn, a wild mushroom, and a homemade smoked chilli mayonnaise. Occasional specials make their way to the menu too, with scrupulous sourcing and fun seasonal twists. Think a shortrib burger made from ex-dairy beef.
Sweets are taken care of with one simple serve – a bowl of salted caramel soft serve made with fresh milk and cream. The best bit is that you don’t even have to pay for it, the scoops are free for all diners if they’re feeling up to seeing off some ice cream after a steak
The short drinks list completes things with a range of interesting softs (rose lemonade, homemade apple and pear fizz, alcohol free G&T etc), and a well-formed wine selection that offers affordable but enjoyable drinks by the glass, carafe or bottle.
