From the team that preserved the nearby Pineapple for an appreciate crowd of Kentish town burghers, comes similarly enjoyable sibling Tapping the Admiral. Here’s an out-of-the-way ‘local pub for local people’... minus the gothic horrors that awaited the casual visitor to Tubbs and Edward’s shop in The League of Gentlemen. Strangers are most welcome to try out CAMRA-accredited real ales (Butt’s, Redemption, Brodie’s and more), and there’s also real perry in the form of Gwynt y Ddraig Two Trees (£3). As at the Pineapple, the kitchen turns out Thai food: tom yum soups, noodle dishes, stir-fries and curries at fair prices. ‘Tapping the admiral’ refers to sneaking a sip of brandy from the barrel in which Nelson’s corpse was embalmed as it was shipped home after the Battle of Trafalgar. But don’t let that put you off your G&T.
