This independently owned café on Queen Square Avenue has become a hit with local office workers and tourists, as have its three other sites in Finzels Reach, Clifton Village and Gloucester Road. The overall look is uncluttered, with cute Scandi touches such as low-hung industrial-chic lights, sugar spooned from Tate & Lyle treacle cans, and coffee served in glasses rather than cups. There are communal tables and window seats, making it a popular spot for remote workers and individuals on lunch on weekdays and groups of friends on weekends.
Breakfast and lunch are the main deals, with a big blackboard on one wall advertising sandwiches, savoury tarts, frittatas and salads, plus tempting piles of cookies, flapjacks, pastries and fruit for those needing something sweet with their caffeine fix. Most of the ingredients are sourced from Bristol-based producers and suppliers, such as Ruby & White Butchers, Bruton Dairy, Bertinet Bakery and Severn Project, and almost everything is made fresh in-house.
Start your day with something from the breakfast menu, perhaps homemade granola or avocado on toast accompanied by a house espresso made with a South American blend roasted by Extract Coffee down the road in St. Werbergs. Or pop in for lunch comprising a range of sourdoughs, flatbreads and focaccias with lively toppings such as Milano salami with Berkswell cheese, rocket and chilli jam.
There’s also a more extensive brunch menu at weekends and there’s never a bad time to pop in for a cup of coffee or tea and one of the many tempting baked goods on offer. These change all the time, but expect to find treats such as jam and cream filled Viennese whirls, white chocolate and raspberry flapjacks, and vanilla and cherry cake. Staff here genuinely care about great customer service and nothing is too much trouble.
