Londoners can’t get enough of smoked and barbecued food, though sometimes it’s easy to forget that it doesn’t necessarily have to be done the American way, and that cultures the world over have a tradition for open-fire cooking. Enter Shukshuk, the latest from the team behind Haggerston’s Berber & Q, which has its heart set in the Berber country of North Africa. Providing the food element within Crate Brewery, grab a seat and nibble on the mezze selection to get the tastebuds zinging, and then add a dollop of smoked garlic toum (a sort of North African aïoli) to your pitta and await the main attractions: maple-glazed merguez sausage takes some beating, as does smoked chicken shawarma, steeped in sumac, cumin and cinnamon. Wash it down with craft beer or equally hip kombucha.
