On the foodie hotspot of Kenwin Street, Truro, you’ll find a charming family-run pizzeria called Piero’s. Started over 25 years ago, this is a restaurant where everyone is welcome and the staff make you feel right at home. It’s become a favourite among locals and an attraction for those passing through. The space is light and bright, with plenty of windows, rustic lighting and plants dotted around the room. The tablecloths are red gingham, and the walls bear the occasional nicknack such as a Venetian mask.
As with many old-school Italian restaurants of this ilk, the menu is expansive. Diners can snack on bread with olive oil and balsamic while perusing the numerous options. Start off with calamari, mussels with white wine and chilli or the classic melon with prosciutto. Alternatively, go for an early carb hit with some garlic bread or bruschetta. After that, it’s pasta time. Choose from Italian staples like lasagne, carbonara, bolognese or the house fettuccine, which features aubergine, garlic and prawns in a tomato sauce. Gluten-free pasta is also available for a small extra fee. If you prefer risotto, there three choices: mushroom and asparagus, mixed vegetables or seafood.
The main courses, however, mix many cuisines from around Europe. Consequently, you can tuck into a veal escalope while someone else at your table might go for the stroganoff. Those who fancy something grilled, meanwhile, can enjoy a sirloin or fillet with a choice of sauces. The pizza oven is put to good use here, so if you don’t want pasta or meat then there are lots of different topping combos to choose from. Chilli lovers should go for the inferno, topped with pepperoni, onion, peppers and plenty of jalapenos. Purists can always go for a Margherita, but there are certainly more exciting options to try. Finish with an authentic tiramisu or profiteroles.
