With celebrity regulars including Rowan Atkinson, Kate Moss and One Direction’s Harry Styles, this redoubtable Hampstead curry house is seldom short of tabloid column inches, and it also gets the thumbs-up from Square Meal: “a perfect regular spot for the best Indian food in London” says one fan enthusiastically. Others rate it as a “simply wonderful local”. The long menu offers few surprises, but the cooking is reckoned to be bang-on in terms of freshness and spicing, with tandooris and tikkas leading the pack. A big contingent of house specials brings lamb passanda, Cragoe murg (a chicken dish named in honour of the distinguished historian) and another speciality dedicated to the Arctic Monkeys – although you can stay in more familiar territory by picking from the line-up of kormas, bhunas, dhansaks, jalfrezis and suchlike. Vegetable dishes, breads and rice are also up to the mark. In short, “great value in every sense of the word”.
