Fill up on authentic tapas dishes in a laid-back setting at this family-friendly Spanish restaurant in North London. Jamon Jamon originally opened at 38 Parkway in Camden under the name George and Nicky’s in the 1950s. However, in 2001 the company changed hands and was converted into a tapas bar where everyone could come and enjoy traditional plates in a relaxed environment. It now has three restaurants in the capital, including Soho, Camden and this one in Belsize Park. The name ‘Jamon’ comes from the Spanish for ‘ham’, with each restaurant boasting its own curing room where jamons are hung to mature.
Similarly to all its restaurants, this site just opposite Belsize Park tube station boasts rustic interiors throughout, from wooden floors to chalk board menus, red walls and exposed bricks. It’s a warm and welcoming dining destination where everyone from families to couples to large groups are welcome.
The menu features a range of classic tapas dishes from sharing boards to paella and, of course, plenty of its house-cured ham. Don't hesitate to order its signature Jamon Iberico (24-month cured acorn-fed Iberico pork ham), while other popular dishes include sliced serrano ham with Manchego cheese, prawns in garlic and chilli, Manchego and spinach croquettes with sweet onion sauce and black squid and shrimp paella. There is also a strong selection of vegetarian dishes, from patatas bravas to fried goat’s cheese with cassava crisps.
The drinks list focuses on wines and sherries, but you can expect plenty of Sangria to wash down your Spanish feast with too, as well as a great-value house Cava. A selection of Spanish beers and ciders are also available, plus soft drinks for the kids and non-drinkers.
