Just minutes from the Tate Modern, between the Southbank and Borough Market, OXBO Bankside serves a British-leaning menu emboldened by French and Eastern influences. Both the menu and interiors hint at the urban history of the Bankside neighbourhood, blending British nostalgia and contemporary simplicity.
It’s a warm, modern setting, with urban cool design features and a romantic, celebratory atmosphere. Picture hexagonal black and white tiled floors, oak panelled ceilings, industrial-esque lighting, and quirky but tasteful animal sculptures. Seating takes the form of mustard-coloured leather banquettes, rustic tables, and decorative perforated steel privacy screens.
With head chef Ollie Couillaud at the helm, the menu is designed to satiate even the pickiest of eaters. Expect a range of plates from indulgent, coma-inducing grub to fresh and healthy plates, all crafted with seasonal, locally sourced produce. Guests can begin with grilled asparagus served with pickled romanesco, purple cauliflower salad and a heady truffle vinaigrette; miso cod with bok choy, carrot and lemongrass puree, and a squid ink cracker; or beef short rib and hash croquettes with celeriac remoulade.
As for mains, dishes have included grilled pork chops with caramelised apple, herb butter and classic French fries; an Aberdeen Angus burger with all the trimmings plus streaky bacon; and sea trout with pea puree, asparagus, and crushed Jersey Royals. Just don’t fill up too quickly, the chocolate and coconut tart with passionfruit and coconut sorbet is not to be missed.
And if that doesn’t tick your boxes, consider a four-course Sunday brunch roast. It’s a comprehensive offering that begins with unlimited starters from the Chef’s Traders Tables, includes pancake, waffle and egg dishes cooked to order, a roast dinner with all the traditional accompaniments, and concludes with your choice of unlimited desserts from a buffet-style table.
