Housed in the Rothiemurchus Centre (just 2km from the centre of Aviemore), this modest but pristine establishment has the feel of an up-to-date Highland lodge. Call in for lunch & you could start with soup (Cullen skink, perhaps) before ham hock terrine, sausages made from local estate beef with wholegrain mash, or a nifty smoked fish platter featuring two types of salmon, mackerel, home-baked oatcakes & soda bread; for afters, perhaps dark chocolate & orange cheesecake. In the evenings (Wed-Sat), dishes get a little more ambitious: say, roast fig, prosciutto & blue cheese salad to start, then lamb chump with bean salad. At other times, Ord Bàn functions as a café & its sweet goodies draw praise from far & wide: apple & maple cake, hazelnut meringue, et al. They also have some good bottled beers & a short wine list from £3.50 a glass.
