In peak lockdown time, April 2020, Jasper Delamothe launched his independent, natural wine company, Oranj. Grounded in a desire to produce (and drink) natural wine with low intervention, biodynamic, and organic practices, Delamothe’s wine company quickly became popular online. Having transformed his business into a subscription service as well as an online shop, and holding a range of pop-up food and music events, Oranj Shoreditch is Delamothe’s latest expansion of the Oranj brand.
Serving up Oranj’s own wine, free from chemicals, Oranj Shoreditch is described as a ‘pub for wine drinkers’. Bringing the natural wine movement to Shoreditch, not far from Brick Lane, Oranj is a unique place for both natural wine lovers, and those still dipping their toes into the natural wine world.
In a 2000 square foot warehouse, Oranj finds its home and serves up its natural beverages. Design materials used to construct the building are on-theme, inspired by the fermentation process: walnut, aluminium and concrete. The setting is as unique and intriguing as the wines on offer.
Speaking of, the wine list is full of – true to Oranj’s name – orange wines, as well as an equally delicious selection of whites and reds. If you’re not a huge wine fan (maybe you’ve tagged along to please a wine obsessive), then don’t panic. There is also a short cocktail list, as well as Lambic beers on offer.
It's not only the drinks that are unique; there are rotating and exciting kitchen residencies at Oranj. December 2022 for instance sees Decatur making itself at home in the Oranj kitchen, serving up seafood, gumbo, baked oysters, and other dishes inspired by the American South. The Oranj bar itself has a small but satisfying collection of snacks, including hams, cheeses, croquetas, and tortillas – perfect accompaniments to a glass or three of Oranj wine.
