SquareMeal Review of Mooch

Hebden Bridge claims to be the hippie and gay capital of the north – a full-on ‘destination’ made up of groovy shops, a picturesque canal and ingenious double-decker housing once occupied by textile workers. There are plenty of cafés hereabouts, but Mooch is one of the standouts – especially if you like funky tunes and funky food. Good-value Mediterranean platters are piled with deli goodies and savoury ciabattas arrive warm, while lamb tagine and burgers fill bigger gaps – leaving little room for Mrs B’s ginger pud or a slab of squidgy carrot cake. The place is renowned for its chilled-out vibe: no one cares if you make a macchiato last four hours, sit in the window, do the crossword or indulge in a late vegan breakfast of smoked tofu, mushrooms and suchlike. Speciality teas, smoothies and eclectic booze too.

I'm very surprised at the negative comments left by Erica B but as the saying goes, ‘You can please some people some of the time…’ I go there a lot with my little boy so could be one of the troublesome parents Erica tut tuts at in her review. Imagine, parents still wanting a coffee in a nice place at times…the cheek of it! The atmosphere in Mooch is always warm and welcoming and it's just that bit better in the cold, dark winter months when the lights are low and the heating is turned up. The homemade cakes go down a treat and the soups are homemade and delicious. My favourite time is after work on a Friday evening when, too tired after the working week to cook dinner, I meet friends and enjoy something light like a falafel special. It's a great place to welcome the weekend filled with a myriad of customers; out-of-towers, people enjoying an early evening dinner and others dropping in for a couple of quick halves of draught lager. The bread is from the fantastic organic bakery a couple of doors up Market Street and the meat is souced locally. It's a great little place. You may need to reserve a table – especially if you want to sit in the coveted window seats to watch the Hebden Bridge world go by.

just had a great lunch at mooch with my family after a lovely walk in the surrounding area. i had the amazing meatball ciabatta and my wife had the goats cheese with caramelised onions and rocket, really tasty! The staff were helpfully and friendly and the general ambience and music really made it a lovely experience. Our kids were made to feel really welcome and high chairs and changing facilities were good. thanks mooch!

The cafe looks warm and inviting, with a community noticeboard- wooden bar, and eclectic decoration. Some of the staff are helpful, and friendly. The menu shows prices which indicate high quality food, freshly prepared, in a friendly environment, and the last time I visited Mooch- this was what I got. I returned to Mooch after two years, to find it under new management. The owner, stood behind the bar, cast dissaproving looks at her staff, customers, and the children sat with their parents-dampening the atmosphere which had been so vibrant last time I visited. We ordered breakfast, after being made to feel as if the staff were doing us a service by providing this meal half an hour before the time their sign said they would switch to the afternoon menu. I looked forward to the well cooked breakfast I had received last time I was there, and my friend looked forward to the exceptional vegetarian breakfast. When my breakfast arrived, the ingredients were poor. Instead of the lightly cooked baby plum tomatoes received last time, we received bland tasteless undercooked cheap tomatoes. The bacon was still good quality, but burnt. Toast made from the cheapest white sliced bread, soggy from the margarine that had been used. Overcooked poached eggs that left water streaming round the plate and onto the toast. The coffee was good, but hardly enough to compensate for a price tag which should guarantee a decent meal, well cooked ,with decent ingredients. I looked at the cakes on offer- and instead of the freshly prepared cakes that had finished our meal last time- we found the type of muffins offered in plastic wrappers elsewhere, with a price tag that indicated one was getting freshly baked goods. All in all, very expensive way of eating very very poor quality food. The owner of Mooch really needs to change the chef, and the suppliers, or the prices-because quite frankly I wouldn't dream of serving up what we had for my family-never mind for customers paying a premium price.
