There are now several fervently supported branches of Monty’s around Ealing & Northfields, set up as independent operations by chefs who once cooked at the old Ealing Tandoori. This flagship venue – plum in the centre of the neighbourhood – is a colourful spot, with ample space divided by carved wooden screens. The menu roams its way through the staple curry-house repertoire, from meat samosas and onion bhajis to chicken Madras or prawn korma, but look carefully and you’ll also find a peppering of Nepalese specialities: to start, try the momo (dim sum-like dumplings filled with spiced chicken or lamb, reflecting the mountain kingdom’s location between India & China); after that, order naram chara (Nepalese chicken curry) or a dish of curried kidney beans. Well-priced set meals and a Sunday buffet lunch also pull in the crowds.
