There’s something about Mexican food that makes the experience of eating it always feel fun. Mezcalito in Newington Green has all the hallmarks of a good time – flavour-packed plates, a well-stocked bar, and the friendliest team. It’s a combination that has proven popular, given the brand originally started in Chelsea and the launch of its Islington site marks growth into a new neighbourhood.
Small and unassuming from the front, the restaurant opens up through to a dining room and bar that is decorated with unique touches. The back wall is painted with a large floral skull mural, while elsewhere there are clashing prints, rattan details and plenty of plants to set the scene.
If you’re happy to share, the starters make the perfect family-style spread. Think nachos, jalapeno poppers, calamari, guacamole, and Mexican pork scratchings served with a zesty salsa. The tacos are undoubtedly the main reason this small taqueria stays busy every night of the week. While there are just four options, they are four good options. The most popular is the Baja style crispy prawn ones with corn chip crumbs, Mexican lime seasoning, cabbage, mango and avocado salsa, and radish. Alternatives include pollo al pastor, sirloin steak and shredded jackfruit. With quesadillas, sides and salsas completing the line-up, there’s something for most tastes here.
For those who love a bargain, Taco Tuesdays see you offered unlimited tacos for £25, plus frozen margaritas. Fancy a challenge? Apparently, the number to beat is 21 tacos eaten by one person.
Desserts include churros and sweet fried plantain with condensed milk, queso fresco and a crack of black pepper.
Wash everything down with one of the well-made house cocktails that span fresh, fruity long drinks and punchy short tequila serves. A forever favourite is the 'Baja California' which brings together berries and Mexican wine in a margarita style drink.
