About

Its construction funded by ex-pat Germans, as England’s first purpose-built gym, this impressive Grade II-listed edifice hosted the indoor events at the 1866 inaugural games that would grow into the modern Olympics. Nowadays, the only exercise to be taken at D&D’s take on a Mittel-European grand café is the steep climb to its galleried mezzanine bar, high under the building’s original oak rafters. Gold medal-contender cocktails (all £10.50) include St Luscious (Plantation rum, fig liqueur, Cocchi Americano, lemon and orange blossom water); Beeren Fix (a jasmine tea-foamed twist on the Bramble), and Haig’s Delight (an apricot and Amaretto-informed, liquorice wood-smoked cocktail that would be yet more delightful if a ballsier whisky than Haig were used). Flensburger pilsner and a strong range of German and Austrian wines by the glass are what to order with the likes of oysters, smoked salmon or caviar blinis, and curry wurst or hot dogs.
