About

Modern British brasserie Maddox Tavern has found its home in an impressive 19th-century grade II listed building on Maddox Street in Mayfair. Once the tailor of Winston Churchill, this stunning site has since been acquired by Roger Payne of the Enhanced Hospitality Group and revamped into a comfortable all-day restaurant for a well-heeled clientele. Open daily for breakfast, lunch, drinks and dinner, Maddox Tavern serves a series of menus filled with familiar British dishes, albeit with a few contemporary twists.  

The sumptuous dining rooms features rich mahogany surfaces throughout, Versailles parquet flooring, a copper-topped bar and an impressive mezzanine overlooking the entire space. The whole restaurant can seat up to 120, while four private dining rooms can be booked for between five and 12 people. 

Head chef Jon Grimes, who has worked at Kobe Jones in Bromley, Aqua Kyoto and Gilgamesh, has created an all-day a la carte menu of British classics with a modern flourish. Look out for venison carpaccio with pineapple chutney, pan-fried foie gras with baby leeks and toasted brioche. Maddox fish pie with gratinated mustard mash and Te Mana glazed lamb rack with artichokes and charcoal calcot onions. Choose from a selection of steaks, too, such as fillet, rib eye, sirloin as well as larger cuts, and don’t hesitate to finish off your feast with a dark chocolate tart with burnt caramelised banana and honeycomb.  

Breakfast is served in the Tavern area at the front of the restaurant and covers healthier options as well as traditional dishes. Later in the day, guests can relax in the Tavern with a menu of light bites such as prawn popcorn, mature cheddar croquettes and a coronation salad. 

The wine list features 75 bins available by the glass or bottle as well as a separate fine wine selection. Look out for a contemporary cocktail list, too, which features the New Bond Sour made with gin, chartreuse, lemon, mango, egg white and bitters.
