Back in the day, the balcony of the old Lord’s Tavern was a prime spot for watching the cricket, applauding our boys in their white flannels & listening to the ever-so-English sound of willow on leather. The hostelry moved to its present site by Grace Gate in the 60s & recently got a makeover, making it a spanking new foodie destination in its own right. Against a discreet backdrop of subtle wood panelling & soft music, visitors can enjoy robust seasonal flavours & dishes that are as loyally British as an MCC tie – think ploughman’s, Lancashire hotpot, Gloucester Old Spot bangers & mash or beer-battered haddock. Open your innings with smoked salmon fishcakes or prawn cocktail, & close with apple & plum crumble or sticky toffee pud. Marston’s ales & guest beers are on hand to quench thirsts, with fizz for century-toasting celebrations.
