You can enjoy a brandy and a cigar (from the humidor) in the compact courtyard/herb garden just off the boutique Hotel Xenia’s cocktail bar – although these luxuries are inversely proportionate to the bijou absinthe/truffle-toned lounge itself, where kiwi-and-lychee martini, elderflower cosmo, lavender margarita and cucumber dream appear among various fragrant fancies. There’s also a trio of hooch-heavy tiki ideas, as well as a smoky martini based on Tanqueray gin and Lagavulin whisky for those wanting something butch. Bar food is served all day, so take your pick from burgers, Mediterranean-style salads, charcuterie and cheese platters, fish and chips, sandwiches and surprises such as parmesan, tomato and aubergine soufflé. With its conservatory and terrace, the whole venue feels jolly and light – in stark contrast to Alfred Hitchcock’s creepy one-time home, directly opposite.
