Cocktails and comedy are germane to the appeal of this artfully dishevelled, curio-stuffed café, bar and event space. Spirited mixes such as Golden Squid (Kraken spiced rum, Bacardi and apricot) and Mary-Jane (a Midori, Malibu and pineapple vodkatini) draw polite applause from a cast that also includes White Lady, Medusa and Caribbean Stallion. Punk IPA and Hackney Hopster are top of the beer taps, while £15 wines are what to order with a selection of Pieminster pies served with gravy, peas and mash (£8). There’s a decked backyard for sunny-day shandies, and free live entertainment is a bonus: drop in on weekly open-mic sessions, jazz jams and cult film screenings (with free popcorn) or watch assorted jokers, jesters, loons and livewires on stage. Otherwise, DJs spin classic soul, funk, house and hip-hop on Fridays and Saturdays.
