SquareMeal Review of Hysteria

Live gigs, loud music, flashing lights, art, events, poetry slams and stand-up comedy aimed at Dalston dudes who are too cool for Essex-does-Shoreditch on Saturday nights – that’s what you can expect at this grungey-retro baroque ’n’ roll, Brooklyn-esque lounge/bar/club that was formerly the Junction Room. Work up a sweat to reggae, retro-electro clash, acid house and disco or dig the hypnotic techno or New York new wave on the basement’s squeeze of a dance floor. After that, chill out with bottled beers, lagers and Aspall’s cider, order keenly priced vino or kick back with cocktails such as Amaretto Sour, Espresso Martini and Bramble (two for £8 during happy hour). Pizzas, from £5, include fiorentina, americana and calzone. Hysteria isn’t necessarily Dalston’s most cutting-edge cocktail bar, nor its most fiercely fashionable, but for drinks and a dance it's an option.
