Step inside the swanky and cool Larry’s Bar, developed in line with the National Portrait Gallery’s impressive revisioning project entitled Inspiring People. This space, tucked into the remarkable curved bare-brick vaults of the Gallery, blends modern sophistication with an exclusive history.
This late-night underground cocktail bar, that also serves bottomless brunch seven days a week, is nestled discreetly away off St Martin’s Place, creating a private and intimate atmosphere. Nevertheless, revellers are not alone, as the walls are covered with over a hundred portraits of legendary West End names, truly living up to its location.
The decor is traditional and sumptuous, with plush velvet and soft, dark leather adding to the moody yet cosy vibe. While hints of gold accents, red cushioning, and warm lighting create a glamorous and inviting space in which to relax.
Cocktails nod to the location's infamous history, with the bar’s specialty, a unique twist on a white lady entitled the Hepburn, harking back to iconic actress Audrey Hepburn’s connections to the area. Even more impressive is the continuation of such renowned mixology, as the original recipe for the white lady was hand-crafted in the very same space.
Other drinks on offer make sure to showcase the very best of the region’s small and independent distilleries. Furthering this focus on local ingredients are the house-made infusions, shrubs, and bitters, which adorn the signature drinks and accompany the bountiful bar snacks. Standouts include Larry’s lobster roll with Exmoor caviar and smaller sharing plates such as truffled Brie de Meaux and British charcuterie. Experimental variations of a Scotch egg - Australian prawn, vegetarian chorizo, and the trusty classic - highlight the bar’s innovation, and proves that a focus on alcohol does not have to detract from good food.
With the bar’s direct access to the Weston Wing, the contemporary collection housed in the Gallery, this is a truly unique dining experience. By combining history and modernity, Larry’s aims to create a social space that embodies one of London’s most exciting districts.
