Teatime at Humphrey’s Bar in the Millennium Gloucester Hotel is a restful break in the day for foot-weary tourists and business-weary conference guests. You are not obliged to have ‘the full works’ – in fact the standard offering simply comprises sarnies (classic smoked salmon or honey-roast ham, perhaps) plus fruit scones with strawberry jam and Devon clotted cream at £15.75. After that, you can add various home-baked pastries (£5.70) or a cheeky glass of Moët (£8.75) as the mood strikes. Tea is by Twinings. The room itself has a pleasant art deco feel, staff are conscientious and professional, and the Gloucester Road location is a key selling point – just a sugar cube’s throw from London’s best museums, parks and shops. Wednesdays and Thursdays are best for atmosphere, as the lid is lifted on the resident grand piano and the ivories are tickled.
