Holy Cow is one of the first vegan cafes to open in Edinburgh, bringing its impressive burgers, veg-packed sandwiches and nutritious salads to the city's plant-based crowd. You can find it just a short walk away from Edinburgh Waverley station, and right next to the St James Shopping Centre in case you're in need of some mid-shopping fuel.
Holy Cow is a friendly and relaxed spot serving lunch and dinner throughout the week, and opens earlier on the weekends to cater for brunch-hungry locals. Whether you’re nipping in to grab a latte and a slice of cake, or are hungry for one of its epic plant burgers, you can't knock Holy Cow for offering versatile vegan dining. Boasting the feel of a charming, chilled-out café, guests can select their choices from a blackboard on the wall, while a counter area features a display of homemade cakes. More recently, the team have opened a hidden garden terrace out the back, a small and secluded spot with bench seating and a patio area that’s perfect for plant-based dining in the sun.
The menu centres heavily around burgers and sandwiches, but you’ll also find lighter bites like soup of the day and fresh salads too. Its famous ‘Muu Burgers’ include a Vietnamese tofu creation filled with hoisin, cucumber and sriracha, and a pulled jackfruit number featuring BBQ jackfruit, mayo and red onion. Or, opt for one of its ‘Holy Sandwiches’ such as a vegan BLT, or a vegan-style ruben. If you're visiting for breakfast or brunch, look out for the full vegan breakfast featuring tempeh, baked beans, scrambled tofu, potato scones, greens and homemade bread, plus fluffy pancakes with a variety of toppings.
On the drinks front, choose from a selection of coffees and teas, soft drinks and signature smoothies.
Holy Cow is also available for afternoon tea, although do note you must make your reservation two days in advance. Expect beetroot wraps with wasabi and green peas hummus, followed by scones with strawberry and lemongrass jam, as well as a selection of classic cakes.
