Angus is not a part of Scotland famed for its upmarket restaurants, but just north of Arbroath, in the village of Inverkeilor, lies a culinary bright spot. Since 1986, this family-run, Franco-Scottish establishment has kept its customers satisfied thanks to the well-crafted cooking & deliberately unfussy service. The ceiling beams & bare stone in the small dining room lend a sense of tradition, while the open fires & stained glass windows create a relaxed & welcoming atmosphere. The four-course dinner could involve a terrine of cured, smoked & fresh salmon followed by a plum tomato & roast red pepper veloute & a grilled fillet of Scotch beef with chanterelle ragout, onion confit, butternut squash puree & pinot noir jus for mains, while a white chocolate & mango iced parfait with caramelized pineapple & a chocolate croquant biscuit is an inventive option for dessert. The wine list is user-friendly & there are rooms upstairs if you fancy a sleepover. Easily the best culinary experience for miles around.
