DO NOT EAT AT THIS RESTAURANT.
I have never before posted a review but I felt that this experience warranted comment…
Having been a regular (and very happy) customer at Gazette Battersea, I decided to book the new Gazette Putney for a meal for my husband and I. We had high expectations based on our experiences of the fantastic SW11 restaurant but our overall experience was appalling to say the least.
We were seated at our table and then waited almost 20 minutes for someone to come and take our drinks order. When the waitress finally arrived, we were made to feel like she was doing us a favour in being there. We ordered wine (which was actually very good) and some water – which didn't arrive until we had asked for it again and then again.
The scallops (starter) were cooked to within an inch of their life. The beef (main course) was fatty and overcooked with a piece of cremated foie gras perched on top and we, along with both tables either side of us, questioned where the promised potato element was – it turned out to be the grey, soggy mound underneath the steak.
But the trio of desserts really took the biscuit (pardon the pun) – a raw giant macaroon, a pot of very sour creamy dessert and a rubbery slab of set pudding rice with some very dry mint nondescript fruit on top.
At this stage we decided we had to say something so we spoke to the restaurant manager. Unfortunately, he seemed to be more interested in handing out stems of red roses to the other diners than listening to our (very polite and gracious) complaint. His response was ‘ no one else has complained this evening’ which probably says more about our reluctance as a nation to stand up and complain than the poor quality of the food and service – we witnessed couples at other tables looking at their desserts with a sense of trepidation and finally disappointment.
My advice, give this place a wide berth and spend your hard-earned cash elsewhere.
