Near to the A22, South Godstone’s Fox and Hounds serve home-cooked food in a charming, quintessential British pub environment. A tudor pub that still feels like the old-worldly tavern that it is, the Fox and Hounds has plenty of history. A pub since the census of 1601 when Queen Elizabeth I was the reigning queen of England, the building itself has been here since 1368. The pub is the last resting place of pirate-turned-smuggler John Trenchman.
Starters include salt and pepper squid with sweet chilli dip, grilled halloumi salad with a balsamic glaze, duck liver pate with chutney and creamy stilton mushrooms. Those delicious dishes lead the way for classics like the crispy cider battered cod with hand cut chips, tartare and mushy peas, a chicken burger with bacon, cheese and BBQ sauce in a brioche bun with sweet potato fries and home cooked ham with egg, chips and beans.
If you're not sure what to go for and are feeling like you want to graze on something with a nice cold pint in hand, why not order the ploughman's platter of ham and three cheeses with crusty bread and pickles, a fish platter of smoked salmon, prawn, crayfish, mackerel pate, or a baked camembert with rosemary and chutney.
Lunch is served until 5pm and includes a selection of sandwiches, wraps and baguettes, jacket potatoes and light lunches like fishcakes and Greek feta salad. On Sunday, delicious roasts are prepared using locally sourced ingredients and are served with roast potatoes, parsnips and seasonal vegetables. Choose from Surrey Hills beef, local leg of lamb, pork, a supreme of chicken or homemade nut roast. There is also a vast daily specials board including fresh fish dishes from Eastbourne, for those who like to sample something a little different.
